2    Introduction

Total Recall is a compact, cost-effective and self-contained Digital Voice Logging unit.  It provides secure recording, storage and playback of telephone calls (or any audio signal), enabling up to 1600 hours of recordings to be stored on an internal database for instant retrieval and playback.

Available as a 4, 8, 12,  or 16-channel units, Total Recall will record the telephone numbers of incoming* and outgoing calls, and store this information in a database, together with a time/date stamp, the duration of the call and reference to the specific channel number.  All these “fields” can be used to search and retrieve calls from the database.

The interface to Total Recall is 2-wire analogue, so any digital line signal will first need to be converted to analogue before being recorded.

Once a call has been located and retrieved from the Total Recall database, the call can be replayed via an internal or external speaker, or, for privacy, via a headphone port.

A “Live Monitoring” function enables the real-time monitoring of calls on selected channels.

Recordings can be archived to an internal Archive (CD) drive as required.  Should you need to record from more than 8 physical connections (telephone/radio), multiple Total Recall units can be installed.

Remote Recall is a Windows 95/98/NT module that enables calls to be replayed on a PC using the Archive CD from the Total Recall logger.   From the PC, calls can also be selected from the Archive (CD) and transmitted via e-mail for replay on a multimedia PC at a remote location.

*Note: Functions only if Caller Line Identification  (CLI) is available on the line at the connection point.

  Total Recall - Voice Logger

Total Recall Voice Logger has the following special features:

It has been specially designed to record telephone conversations, or any audio signal

It records digitally (records direct to a hard disk in compressed file format).

It starts and stops recording by VOX or Off-Hook activation.

It archives the recordings to CD, to provide a permanent backup facility.

It has a serial connection for interface to a PC (to facilitate call accounting).

It has a high compression factor, resulting in a large storage capacity.

It has a facility to live monitor calls.

All channels can be configured and managed selectively.

It is compact, self contained, and easy to install and operate.

Total Recall can be installed to record from any one of five possible signal sources:

 An analog trunk line.

An analog extension line.

A telephone handset, either analog or digital (via handset splitter).

A digital extension line, using D/A converters.

A radio or other audio signal presented as a 2-wire analog interface.

There are four different versions of Total Recall:

A 4-channel version.  (Part number TR-04)

An 8-channel version.  (Part number TR-08)

An 12-channel version.  (Part number TR-12)

An 16-channel version.  (Part number TR-16)

Total Recall recorders can be upgraded to a maximum of 16 channels.

 2.1   Indicators, Controls & Terminology

Total Recall is very simple to operate, and has a minimum number of ports and key controls.  Everything that is needed to operate Total Recall is included with the unit.  It is not necessary to attach a PC/monitor as a management console for the recorder.

(Top View, Showing main control/connection points on Total Recall)

2.1.1   Recorder Front Panel

Line Output Jack.    Standard 3.5mm audio jack for the connection of external speakers or a simple tape recorder.   A tape recorder may be used if one or a few calls are required for replay at a location that is not equipped with a multimedia PC.

Headphone Jack.    Standard 3.5mm audio jack for connection of headphones, to enable replay or recordings in a noisy environment, or where privacy is required.

Volume Control.  Rotary knob for adjustment of replay volume.

CD.   Standard controls for front panel of a re-writable CD drive.

2.1.2   Recorder Rear Panel

Serial Ports.   Two Serial ports, configured as RS-232, with standard RJ45 sockets for attachment to a PC (for text file transfer) and PABX (for SMDR data transfer).  Connection to the PC would normally be via a DB9 (M) connector/interface.

A single 2 meter serial cable is supplied with Total Recall.  Please contact your PC supplier for fabrication of any additional serial cable or extension cable, using the cable specification below.

Line Interface Ports. The recorder will be configured as a 4, 8, 12, or 16-port unit. The connectors for the telephone line interface are standard RJ11C/RJ12/RJ14.

The 2-wire analogue line interface:

4 Channel DSP (BLACK colored RSJ connectors viewed from the outside): 2 wire connection uses pins 3&4, (the centre 2 pins) See diagram. Each connector has only 1 x 2 wire input.

8 Channel DSP (GREY colored RSJ connectors viewed from the outside); 2 wire connections, Line 1 is pins 3 & 4 (centre 2 pins), Line 2 is pins 2 & 5 See diagram. On 8 channel board each connector has 2 x 2 wire inputs.

One (1) connection point is required for every line or handset to be recorded.

If connection to a radio (audio) signal is required, then one connection point will be required if the Transmit (Tx) and Receive (Rx) signals are already combined at the output port.  If the signals are not combined, then two recorder ports will be required and, on replay, the user will only hear a one-sided conversation (either the Transmit or Receive).
Total Recall
does not provide a facility for combining Tx and Rx signals.

Power Connector.   100-250VAC, Auto-sensing.  On/Off Switch.   Located on the rear panel. Fuse holder with T0.8 amp Anti surge 240V.

Important Note:  To ensure no loss of power or interruption to recordings, it is strongly recommended that the Voice Logger be connected via a UPS power system. Total Recall utilizes a database with potentially open and active files. Power disruption with an unclean shutdown will cause damage to these files and will require database rebuild.
